Using a Squarrel is like combining several traditional barrels into one compact square barrel. Mix and match to create your own unique flavor profile.
TAP LIKE A
Squarrels can double as kegs- simply use a sankey spear attachment and you can hook the Squarrel directly to your tap line. It will act exactly like a regular beer keg. Or, use the Squarrel like a Firkin and serve from the sample valve.
Fermenting and infusing additives is extra easy with a 6 inch tri-clamp cap replacing the role of the traditional bung. Plus all parts can be easily sanitized.
The sanitary nature of the Squarrel allows for greater control in a sour beer. Plus, because the staves are independent, you can easily transfer sour-ed staves to new Squarrels to act as a sour ‘starter’ and extend the original flavors into a whole new batch. You can also ‘finish’ a sour beer in a Squarrel to obtain rounding and mellowing characteristics in a quick period of time.
MONTHS OF FLAVOR IN EACH STAVE
Squarrels will provide a beer with tons of flavor- and fast. Most beers are finished after just a few days when starting the virgin woods. The first use is always the fastest, and though it depends on your product and your desired goals, most beers are ready to be served within about 1 week. The second use requires slightly longer aging rates, and so on, but we generally see a few months-worth of flavor in each stave before the wood notes are neutralized and the stave will need replaced.
No racking required- Squarrels stack on themselves.
10-gallon Squarrels stack together while 30 and 60-gallon Squarrels can stack interchangeably. We recommend stacking 3 high and the Squarrels can be bolted together for extra security.
Plus, using Squarrels require ~½ the space.
The steel is easy to sanitize but now you can also mitigate the prospective of contamination by baking the staves in an oven for a thoroughly sterile environment. Also, by tapping directly from the Squarrel you can reduce your points of contact- further alleviating the potential for contamination.
Becasue every stave is separate you do not have to replace every stave in the Squarrel all at one time. When you are ready to retire some of the staves, just replace a portion at a time.
FLAVOR LARGE BATCHES
Use the Squarrel as a ‘wood back’ (similar to the way a hop back works) and pump beer after the boil through the Squarrel to extract wood flavors.
